Charles Dickens and his belief in the power of magnets

Charles Dickens was a light sleeper, who found it difficult to drop off to sleep at all unless his head was pointing due north.  To make sure of this he always carried a compass with him and, if necessary, beds were shifted.

Dickens would not have suffered from the ill effects of harmful electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that are emitted from modern applicances, such as televisions, computers and mobile phones but even in Victorian times, magnetic therapy was recognised to improve the body’s natural flow of energy and stimulate wellbeing.
